Makeup Made Easy: Step by Step

Once you learn how to apply your makeup it should only take about 10 minutes to complete the following 12 step application. Practice makes perfect!

STEP 1

Apply a concealer or camouflage one shade lighter than the skin tone to the deep lines and shadows of the face. A concealer is made to highlight dark areas of the face. It can also be used to narrow a wide nose by using it down the center of the nose. Click here to learn more about camouflaging.

STEP 2

Foundation is applied. Choose a color that comes closest to the skin tone. The color should match well enough that you don't see it on the skin. With darker skin tones or with skin discoloration or freckling you might need a shade darker than the skin. Persons with reddish complexions (Rosacea or Acne) might need to first use a light coat of the Green Toner.

For normal to dry skin I recommend applying the Alaska's Secret Foundation while the Midnight Sun Moisturizer is still visible on the skin. Generously dot the foundation on the high points of the face - forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin - then blend lightly over the face to the edge of the jaw line, feathering it away at the edges.

For Oily skin I recommend to first mist the face with Misty Fjords Hydrating Mist. While the face is still damp add a small amount of Midnight Sun Moisturizer and lightly dot Alaska's Secret Foundation over the face to the edge of the jaw line.

For dark skin tones the Contour Stick makes a wonderful foundation that smoothes and evens the skin tone controls oil and leaves a flawless finish! The light Contour stick is great for light chocolate complexions and the dark contour is great for the dark chocolate tones.

AVOID USING FOUNDATION ON THE NECK. THE COLOR SHOULD BE CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE SKIN TONE THAT YOU CAN STOP AT THE JAW LINE.

STEP 3

Contour cream is applied to set back fuller features and slim down the shape of the face. It can be used on the sides of the nose to narrow a wide nose, the sides of the temples to narrow a large forehead, under the cheekbones to slim the face and under the jaw to slim down a double chin. The Contour Creme can also be used for dark skin tones the Contour Stick makes a wonderful foundation that smoothes and evens the skin tone, controls oil and leaves a flawless finish! The light Contour stick is great for light chocolate complexions and the dark contour is great for the dark chocolate tones.

STEP 4

Creamy Blush gives a natural glow to any skin type. It works best when blended with your fingertips. The blush should be set on the ball of the cheek. It should start directly under the pupil about 1 inch below the eye area and go no farther down than the nose. It should be lightly blended to follow above the contour of the cheekbone towards the temple.

STEP 5

Stay All Day Eye Shadow Base is the artist's secret tool. Apply "Stay All Day" to the eyelid from lash to brow to provide holding power to any shadow. "Stay All Day" will help the eyeshadow go on evenly and keeps it from creasing or wearing off.

STEP 6

Proper use of Eyeshadows can do wonders. You can change the shape of your eyes and bring back a more youthful and vibrant look. Eyeshadows can also take away that crepe or puffy look that tends to age us and cause us to look and feel tired.

  1. I like to first start with a highlighting color applied over the entire eyelid. Highlighting colors are the lightest colors, preferably the neutral colors that blend with the skin tone - pinks or nude shades, just not the bold obvious colors.
  2. Color shadow goes next according to your color area on the eye shape. The color area can be used in accent areas - corners of the eyes and/or around the lash line.
  3. The contour shadow is your blender, usually something in the brown tones or similar muted inconspicuous colors.
  4. The hot spot is used for opening the tired eye. The hot spot color is usually a dot of bright color, applied directly above the center of the eyelid to open the eye.

Choose your colors

When choosing colors, first consider if you are a warm tone or a cool tone. If you are a cool tone you usually have a pink or blue undertone to their skin. If you are a warm tone you will have a peach or green (olive) undertone.

To easily find out what tone you are, find a small swatch of both silver and gold material and hold it up to your bare face first the silver then the gold.

Make sure you are in natural lighting. Take notice, which color brightens your skin, lips, eyes and reduces dark circles. Sometimes this takes a trusted friend to help give you an honest opinion. If you look better in the gold you are a warm tone, this means you would look best in Spring/ Fall tones. If you look better in the silver, you are a cool tone, and would look best in Summer/Winter tones.

Step 7

The White pencil is made especially for the inside line of the eye. It makes the eye look larger and whiter. To sterilize the white pencil, sharpen it and then remember to soften it by warming it on the fatty part of your hand followed by a quick wipe with a tissue.

On dark, complicated and most Asian clients, it is best to use the Onyx, Bark or Granite in the inside rim.

Step 8

Lining the Eye: the purpose of a liner is to define the lash line and enhance the shape of the eye. It is your choice whether to go with a Automatic Pencil liner or a Liquid liner.

Automatic Eye Pencils

Automatic Eye Pencils give the eyes a soft outline. The pencils can be used both above and below the lash line or on the inside rim of the eye for a smoky dramatic look (avoiding the tear duct area). It is best to hold your breath when applying any liners; it helps to keep your hand steady.

Liquid Liners
Liquids Liners define the lash line, last all day and do not smudge.

The Liquid Liner is used to enhance the lash line. Liquid liners make the lash line look fuller. When applying liquid liner hold your breath to help steady your hand. It works easiest if you start on the top inside corner of the eye and follow the lash line to the end of the lashes, resting the brush lightly on the lashes as you go. When applied to the bottom lash line, you will start from the inside and work your way out. It is best to use the darker colors Ebony, Bronze Beauty, Slate, Jade and Blueberry for this. IF YOU MAKE THE LINE TOO THICK, USE A DAMP Q-TIP AND CORRECT IT IMMEDIATELY.

Liquid Liner color suggestions:

Cool Tones/ Silver Cape: Warm Tones/ Gold Cape:
Ebony Ebony
Slate Slate
Jade Forest
Glare Ice Bronze Beauty
Jonrowe Blue Gold Streak
Iris Jade
Blueberry

As you can see some of these liquid liners can go on either skin tone.

When using the lighter colors, Forest, Jonrowe blue, Gold Streak, Iris, and Glare Ice, it is recommended to apply these colors first followed by a thin line of the darker colors. For people who do not want to wear eye shadows you can use these colors in place of shadow color.

Step 9

Mascara is the final touch; it finishes the look of the eye. NEVER PUMP THE WAND IN THE TUBE, IT PUSHES AIR INTO THE TUBE AND CAUSES THE MASCARA TO DRY OUT SOONER AND THICKEN.

Apply mascara to the top of the lashes first, to cover any excess shadow that may be in the lashes. Then apply about 3 coats to the top lashes bending the lashes upwards with each stroke. Followed by 2 to 3 coats on the bottom lashes. Let the lashes dry between each coat.

MY MASCARA IS MADE FOR SENSITIVE EYES; IT IS ALSO GREAT FOR PEOPLE WITH CONTACTS. IT THICKENS, EXTENDS AND HELPS TO CURL THE LASHES. IT DOES NOT SMEAR, RUN, OR FLAKE.

Step 10

Before beginning the brow take a clean Q-tip or mascara wand, and clean any makeup off the brow. My eyebrow pencils are made to give the illusion of little hairs. With a gentle touch lightly design the brow with a little fine feathery motion. The Brow should start above the corner of the eye the high point of the arch should set at point B. Brows should end at point C. (See diagram)

Step 11

To achieve the finished look use a cotton ball and lightly powder the shiny areas of the face with my Creamy Powder Foundation. For younger people or those of you who don’t want to use foundation the Creamy Powder Foundation can be used in place of regular foundation. For people desiring the more matt look use the Loose Translucent Powder.

Step 12

Lip Liners:

My automatic Lip Liners are fortified with vitamin A, D & E they are non-drying and go on very smooth. To achieve the most natural look, avoid using a lip liner that is obviously darker than the lipstick. A lip liner is meant to enhance the lips, set the lipstick and keep the lipstick from bleeding. I recommend following the natural lip line to make thick lips smaller apply on the inside of the natural line. To enhance thin lips apply to the outside of the natural line be careful not to over correct by making them obvious.

After lining the lips I always fill in the lips with the Lip Liners to help hold the lipstick in place.

Gloss:

The final touch to the lips is the gloss. Some woman might not like the feel of a gloss so they should stay just with the lipstick. You can also use a gloss in place of a lipstick for a more natural look. The tube lip-gloss is great for women on the go. It is also favored by teens for a quick touch up. It can be carried easily in their pocket or backpacks. The Super Shiny Lip Gloss is a thicker longer lasting high sheen gloss. Many newscasters, actresses, and models use this for a dramatic look.

For a pouty look, apply one of the lighter colors (only in the center of the lip). For a super shiny look, fully apply gloss to lips.

The use of warm and cool tones is not always an exact answer. Each color is a representation of its color tone. There are many factors to consider when doing a makeover; a person’s body chemistry, medications or individual preference makes a big difference in how a color will apply to them. In some cases I have seen the use of color totally change a persons outlook on life. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut with using the same colors for years. If this is the case try something totally different. Maybe the reason you are not happy with your makeup is because you have been using the wrong colors for years. Have fun with makeup change is fun. Do something a little different every day. You don't always have to match all your colors together. Change sets you apart.
